This exquisite handmade pendant-mask is a work of art and a true representation of a 16th century mask of iyoba (Queen Mother) of the Edo people of Nigeria, Court of Benin. It was rare for a woman to achieve status and authority equal to that of senior town chiefs, but because of her wise counsel and her help in securing his claim to the throne, Esigie (one of Benin’s greatest leaders in the sixteenth century) honored his mother, Queen Idia, by bestowing the title of iyoba (Queen Mother) upon her. An original pendant mask made of ivory, iron and copper is housed in the British Museum, in London, and an almost identical mask is housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
